Set Connecticut after World War II, The Stranger is a cat and mouse game between Wilson (Edward G. Robinson), a member of the Allied War Crimes Commission and Franz Kindler (Orson Welles), a Nazi who has assumed the false identity of Dr. Charles Rankin.
To complete his new intelligentsia disguise, Kindler marries Mary Longstreet, daughter of a Supreme Court justice.

Subject: Last 1-2 lines of dialogue are missing
The last line of the film is Edward G. Robinson saying "Goodnight, Mary. Pleasant dreams." That, and possibly one or so preceding lines, is missing from the copy of The Stranger made available here

An absolutely terrific movie. I have not seen this movie for about 30 years and had totally forgotten about it. Orson Welles is terrific as the evil Nazi and the whole mood is brilliantly captured by the director. It is suspense at it's very best. Nothing out there can hold a candle to this movie. It's a must must for any movie buff. A tip top movie.

Subject: the stranger is no stranger just abit odd
This film I saw years ago and didn't really understand it but not since downloading an burning it onto DVD (I used MPEG 2), I am glad I did. Very suspenseful. I highly recommend to anyone who likes a good mystery with O. Welles as the protagnost and E.G. Robinson as the hero.

Subject: The Clueless Woman
Modern film makers sometimes try to create the look of classic movies, but one thing they never get right is the women. Loretta Young creates an aura of cluelessness and helplessness in this role that today's actresses don't seem to be able to do.

Orson Welles is no slouch either. He's able to portray a german who has no trace of an accent after only a year in the US.

Not a deep movie, but a Welles movie is always finely done.

Subject: Good
Edward G. Robinson hunts Nazi war criminals in this well acted and directed film. Once the implausible premise of the story is swallowed, the rest is entertaining and gripping. The dramatic ending is worthy of Hitchcock.

I downloaded the mpeg1 file. The film is in good shape. Occasional pixelation.

Subject: It's good.
They wouldn't show it on the classic movie channel so much if it wasn't good.
See if you don't keep asking yourself why Robinson doesn't just arrest Wells in the beginning.
That's the only thing I could think of through the whole movie.
